Design
for Casting Soundness
Eliminating Stress Concentrations and Hot Spots
Two
important design principles in casting are --
Round corners generously to reduce
stress concentrations.
Avoid isolated thick sections where
hot spots could develop.
--- Hot spots in casting are regions
which become thermally isolated and are the last to cool, forming shrinkage porosity or
cavities in the casting.
--- Reduce the size of isolated thick sections
or provide gradual transitions between sections of different thickness.
