Steel Casting Technology Course

SFSA announces a new training opportunity for members!

Course:

The SFSA Steel Casting Technology Course covers the casting processes of design engineering, molding, melting, heat treatment, finishing, inspection and all processes necessary to produce a cost effective, high quality product. It is designed to introduce new technical foundry personnel (which may include engineers, metallurgists, sales personnel, quality technicians, operation managers, etc.) to the fascinating steel foundry industry. The class covers the manufacture of steel castings with the following topics:

  • Basic Metallurgy
  • Design Engineering
  • Melting - charging
  • Melting - oxygen blow
  • Patterns
  • Core & Molding - sand & binder (No-bake)
  • Melting - slag control
  • Melting - tapping & deoxidation
  • Core & Molding - wash & closing
  • Pouring
  • Solidification & Cooling
  • Finishing - shakeout & riser removal
  • Finishing - grinding
  • Heat Treatment
  • Welding
  • Inspection - visual & mag particle
  • Inspection - hardness & liquid penetrant
  • Statistical Process Control
  • Chemical Analysis

Topics will both be presented and activities worked to promote understanding and long-term retention. In addition to Q&A time for the course topics, the participants are encouraged to bring their current problems for discussion. These can be on any topic or casting defect. Bringing pictures or movies of the operations will aid in helping identify areas for study and improvement. We know the knowledge gained the attendees will prove to benefit your company for years to come.

Presenter:

The teacher, Tom Stevens, is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati in Metallurgical Engineering and has over 50 years of experience in the foundry industry. The SFSA Handbook was revised in the early 1990’s under his chairmanship. He served for many years on the High Alloy Research Committee, ASTM Casting Committee, and as a member of the SFSA Board of Directors. His work at the Duriron Co., Wollaston Alloys, HICA, Carondelet, NACO, and Magotteaux led to an understanding of the various processes to produce castings. The last 17 years have been dedicated to teaching engineers at various international and domestic foundries. Tom specializes in high alloy and wear resistant castings.

Location and Dates:

The course will be held over four different meeting dates. The registered individual must attend all four sessions. The sessions will be held monthly near Chicago O’Hare. The course will run from 8:00A-5:00P on the following Wednesdays and from 8:00A-3:00P on the following Thursdays:

  • April 19-20
  • May 24-25
  • June 21-22
  • July 26-27

Registration:

Course registration and payment are required, and can be done online here. Early bird registration before March 31st is $800. Registration before the first session on April 19th is $1,000. A full refund will be provided for cancellations before 3/31 and substitutions may be made before 4/19. Substitutions after the first session is not permitted as the four sessions must be attended by the same individual. The class size is limited to the first 18 registrations to promote discussions and enable small group break-out activities. Hotel and course outline will be sent to all registrants.
